Why layered necklaces work
A single necklace is pretty. Two or three at different lengths? That's a look. Layering adds depth and personality to even the simplest outfit — and it's easier than it looks once you know the rules.
Rule 1: Vary the lengths
The golden rule of layering is spacing. Aim for roughly 2 inches (5 cm) between each layer so the necklaces sit separately instead of tangling. A classic combo: a 14" choker, a 16" pendant, and an 18" chain. Our adjustable-fit necklaces make this easy — you can fine-tune each length until the spacing looks right.
Rule 2: Mix textures, keep one metal
Pair a delicate chain with a bolder pendant, or a smooth snake chain with a textured rope chain. Mixing textures creates visual interest. When you're starting out, keep all pieces in the same metal tone (all gold or all silver) — it's the simplest way to look intentional.
Rule 3: Odd numbers look best
Three necklaces almost always look better than two or four. Start with three: a short base, a medium pendant that acts as the focal point, and a longer chain to complete the cascade.
Rule 4: Let one piece be the star
If one necklace has a bold pendant or charm, keep the others simple and delicate. They should frame the statement piece, not compete with it.
Rule 5: Match it to your neckline
V-necks and scoop necks are made for layering — they give each chain room to shine. With high necklines or turtlenecks, go longer: let the layers fall over the fabric.
Starter combinations to try
- Everyday minimal: thin choker + small pendant + medium chain
- Evening out: pendant necklace (the star) + two delicate chains
- Bold and gold: chunky chain + mid-length pendant + long fine chain
Tangle-free tip
Put the shortest necklace on first and the longest on last. At night, store layered sets separately or use a straw trick — thread each chain through a drinking straw before clasping to stop tangling in your jewellery box.
